Operations Center 2, CIA Headquarters Langley, Virginia

Leroux stared at the screen in stunned silence, the satellite footage showing the helicopter’s wreckage with its full load of fuel now a raging cauldron of death. His stomach churned with the implications.

“Tommy,” whispered Tong, her voice cracking.

They had both worked with him several times in the past couple of years. He was a good kid, brilliant, and full of life. And now in an instant, if the last update from Simmons’ team was accurate, he and his girlfriend were gone. Leroux drew a deep breath, forcing himself back into the moment. There was a job to do, and what had just happened could lead to all-out war. He glanced over his shoulder at Marc Therrien, one of their best at analyzing footage for anomalies. “Check every satellite image we have of that area. I want to know what took down that chopper. Was it a missile or a bomb?”

“I’m on it.”

“Holy shit!” exclaimed Child.

Leroux turned. “What?”

Child pointed at the main screen. Leroux spun to see the tactical display now showing dozens of missiles, some still heading toward the border, others already crossing it. He cursed then pointed at Tong. “Notify the Chief that this is going down.” He turned to Therrien. “Notify our asset on the ground.”

“Yes, sir.”

He turned to Child. “Get me footage of that facility. And somebody track those missiles. Are any of them heading for the primary target?”

Tong hung up her phone. “The Chief is on his way. I’m on the missile tracking.”

Therrien shouted from the back of the room. “Our ground asset has acknowledged.”

Leroux gave him a thumbs-up as he turned his attention to the displays. “Sonya, what have you got for me?”

Tong hammered at her keyboard. “I’ve got nine missiles that could possibly target the facility. I’ve colored them orange.”

Leroux’s eyes shifted to the tactical display, the missiles in question changing from red to orange, the primary target highlighted with a pulsing green indicator. “Time to first impact?”

“Three minutes.”

Leroux cursed. There was no way in hell anyone was getting out of there alive. His eyes narrowed. “What’s happening?”

Tong reexamined her terminal. “All nine are still inbound, but three appear to be heading to different targets. Six still likely to hit the complex.”

The door hissed open and Morrison rushed in, his eyes instantly glued to the displays. “Survivors?”

Leroux shook his head. “No evidence of any.”

“Nobody is surviving that,” muttered Child.

Morrison joined Leroux at the center of the room. “Any word from our asset?”

“Only acknowledgment of the incoming missiles.”

“Get him.”

Tong gently spoke into her mic then shook her head. “I can’t make contact.” She held up a finger as she pressed the headphone against her ear.

Morrison stared at her. “Well?”

“It’s him.”

“What did he say?”

She smiled. “He said, ‘Wait an effing minute. I’m busy trying not to die here.’”
